Gonzen iron mine

The Gonzen iron mine in Sargans offers a labyrinth of tunnels and galleries, some of which have been open to the public since 1983. A restaurant and a museum complete the experience, and guided tours are available by prior arrangement.
The local mountain Gonzen towers imposingly above the small town of Sargans. The iron-bearing rock in the mountain was discovered and mined around 2000 years ago. This resulted in a labyrinth of tunnels and galleries with a total length of almost 90 kilometers.
A small part of the mine has been open to the public since 1983. There is a restaurant and a museum at the entrance to the mine. The museum is located at the back of the restaurant and can be visited independently of a guided tour during the restaurant's opening hours.
Various guided tours are available by prior arrangement.
