A hidden gem on the Flumserberg

Winter hiking Seebenalp

Berghotel Seebenalp on the Flumserberg

Well hidden but easily accessible

This is how you could describe the winter hiking trail to the Seebenalp mountain hotel. The Flumserberg ski area is a popular excursion destination and the 65 kilometers of slopes above Lake Walen attract many snow sports enthusiasts.

Flumserberg also has a quieter side, away from the slopes. You have to earn this side a little. The former Kurhaus is just under 4 kilometers and a good 300 meters in altitude from the starting point of the hike.

Taking a different path

The Tannenbodenalp is a hive of activity. The hub of the Flumserberg is the starting point of the hike. At the beginning, the groomed winter hiking trail winds its way between the slopes before quickly becoming quieter. As the sun glints through the snow-covered winter forest, the snow glistens particularly beautifully. Wonderful!

So while most winter sports enthusiasts head off in the direction of the Maschgenkamm or Prodkamm, we take a different route. A quieter one. But a particularly beautiful one.

The hike in a nutshell

Type of tour:
same outward & return journey

Stage destination:
Mountain Hotel Seebenalp

Highlights:
View of the imposing Churfirsten mountains & deep view of Lake Walen

Outlook & low view

As you hike through the snow-covered winter forest, climbing a few meters in altitude at a pleasantly steady incline, the view of the imposing peaks of the Churfirsten is always clear. The striking appearance of the summit formation characterizes the landscape around the Flumserberg and when you see them, you know why. They tower proudly and mightily above Lake Walen, to which you can look deep down.

The surprise effect

As you hike along and take advantage of the many photo opportunities to capture souvenir photos, you almost forget the time. Until the forest clears and the view of the basin becomes clear, where the striking Sächsmoor towers above the Seebenalp. The slopes all around are already illuminated by the sun. The glow spreads across our faces as we enjoy the view.

Healthy appetite

It stands there proudly - the former spa hotel right on the lakeshore. It seems a little unreal in this imposing mountain world. And at the same time, it is completely natural. After hiking here, you're sure to have worked up a healthy appetite, which you can satisfy on the large sun terrace . But the hearty dishes won't make you think of a stay at the spa.

After an extended break, you return to the starting point on the same route, refreshed and full of impressions.

Our tips

This tour gets better and better as the winter progresses. The tour is at its best from the beginning of February, when the sun is already a little stronger.

Most of the route is shady, so you should dress warmly. However, the Berghotel Seebenalp is in the sun much earlier. An early start is therefore not necessary and you can get a good night's sleep.

As with all winter activities, the onion principle also applies here. Several thin layers ensure a perfect body climate during exercise or breaks. Sunglasses and sun cream, gloves and headgear are essential anyway. A small rucksack with tea or snacks is ideal for stopping at the various rest points or stowing away items of clothing.

The Flumserberg stands out with its easy accessibility. You can reach the starting point "Tannenboden" with the "Seejet" gondola from Unterterzen. (from Zurich in under 1 hour). Alternatively, you can take the train to Flums or Sargans and from there take the bus directly to the starting point.

If you arrive individually by car, there is a large (chargeable) parking lot available.

The tour is moderately demanding in terms of fitness (7.6 km distance, just under 350 meters in altitude) and is therefore well suited for those seeking relaxation, families (with not very young children) and groups. There are plenty of benches along the route where you can take a short break.

The tour has some great photo spots in store. Right at the start of the tour, as you hike through the snow-covered forest. Halfway along the route is the enchanted "Alp Winkelzahn". Before and after this, there are views down to Lake Walen. The imposing Churfirsten peaks tower high above as a photo highlight on the Flumserberg. Shortly before you reach Alp Winkelzahn, the basin where the mountain hotel is located opens up. This is also a great photo spot.

Yes, the Berghotel Seebenalp also offers overnight accommodation. In double rooms, family rooms or dormitories. You can find more accommodation tips below.

The winter sports report on the Flumserberg is updated daily. There you will always find the latest information on trail conditions.

If you prefer a less steep ascent, you can make the tour easier as follows. Take the chairlift from Tannenboden to Chrüz. From there, hike to Seebenalp and save yourself a few meters in altitude. On the way back, you can decide whether to take the regular route to Tannenboden or take the chairlift again to shorten the route.

The tour to Seebenalp is suitable for dogs. Please note that you are partly in the ski area. To ensure a harmonious coexistence between winter sports enthusiasts and dog owners, we ask for mindfulness and mutual respect. Therefore, make sure you keep your dog on a lead when crossing slopes or at blind spots. This tour starts by crossing the ski slope twice. Afterwards, you will be on wide, flat, easy-to-walk paths.

There are Robidog stations at the starting point and along the way. Please dispose of dog waste in the designated areas.

Dogs are allowed on the terrace of the Seebenalp restaurant, but not inside. In bad weather, dog boxes are available behind the restaurant.
