UNESCO World Heritage Tectonic Arena Sardona

UNESCO World Heritage Tectonic Arena Sardona
The Tectonic Arena Sardona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a unique opportunity to observe the formation of the mountains. The region around Piz Sardona impressively demonstrates tectonic processes and is of great educational and scientific importance.
The imposing mountain ranges of the Tectonic Arena Sardona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are a unique example of how mountains are formed. In the fascinating mountain landscape around Piz Sardona in the border area between the cantons of St. Gallen, Glarus and Graubünden, tectonic processes can be observed in a vivid way that is unique in the world. Along the line visible from afar, the "Glarner Hauptüberschiebung", 250-300 million year old rocks were pushed over a distance of around 40 kilometers onto much younger, 35-50 million year old rocks. The 300 km2 area is a witness to mountain formation and is of great educational and scientific importance. The fascination of this landscape can be experienced at first hand on various hiking and biking trails, during a visit to one of the interesting geological sites or on a guided geological tour. The Sardona World Heritage Trail leads hikers from Filzbach to Flims through the middle of the core area.
