Public 2-day guided tour of the disused Gonzen Sargans iron mine
A very special mine tour! It lasts two days and focuses on the mine of the years 1920 - 1953, namely the Nausgrube, which experienced its heyday with the surface center consisting of two miners' houses, compressor station, workshops and cable car mountain station. We gather at the Vild tunnel station for the start on Saturday morning and take the Gonzen Express through the base tunnel into the Gonzen. Accompanied by experienced Gonzen guides, we roam through the "modern mining" of the iron ore back to the 1930s and reach the center of the Nausgrube (1000 m above sea level) in the evening. We eat and spend the night in a well-constructed rock shelter. The next day we climb further up to the historic ore mining site of our ancestors. The descent leads us in fine weather through the Gonzenwald forest, along the ore trail, past the ore picture and back into the valley. We will reach our starting point in Vild again at around 5.00 pm. The 2-day tour is a tough mountain tour in the mine, with a difference in altitude of around 900 m, on partly bad roads/paths and many dilapidated steps. A very good level of fitness and surefootedness are therefore required. The temperature is between 8 and 13°C and the humidity is 90 - 95%. Good equipment with good hiking boots (not light hiking boots) is important, a flashlight, gardening gloves and poles are recommended. You will be provided with a helmet and a torch. Take your snacks, drinks, spare clothes etc. with you in a small rucksack.
